WHAT IS A WEEKEND? 3

Spent this weekend getting ready for September First Friday at the UT Downtown Gallery. I will be showing work with my School of Art colleagues. I got everything ironed out and will be installing later this week. 

Some previews of my first attempts at sculpture. It felt more like making 3D collages though. 

I took some glamour shots of Miss Mamie and walked around Knoxville on Saturday enjoying some local festivals and getting back into the swing of going to the farmers market. I had missed it for a few weeks from being out of town. (The mountains! The beach! Woe is me.) Didn't end up getting anything. Late birds apparently do not get the corn. 

Oh! And since the last time I posted I moved studios. I've doubled my space, and it's been great. Here's a little before and after shot. 

WHAT IS A WEEK END? 2

I've been wanting to play around with sculpture and have been making these recently. They are made of fake flowers and egg cartons.

I had Friday morning off. (Federal Holiday, y'all) and we drove down to our friend's farm to pick up a pork shoulder to smoke for the 4th of July and to meet the new pigs. I also met some interestingly shaped tomatoes. It's amazing what's out there once you stop getting the perfect, round, grocery store ones.

I ran into this unfortunate fellow later at the UGO. I would love to cook a pig head someday.

Later that evening was First Friday, and my studio had an exhibition at the Emporium on Gay Street.

I'm not entirely sure this is finished. I may keep working on it after July.

TOMATO HEAD

I'll be hanging my work at Tomato Head this evening. You can see these newbies at the Market Square location through the month of December, and then at the Bearden location during January. Last time I hung work at Tomato Head was July of 2012. My work's changed a lot since then. Check it out if you're in the area!

SHE'S MAKING PIGS AGAIN

 Recently, I made a sign for a farmer friend. His girlfriend thought his tent at the Farmer's Market could use a little sprucing up, and that spruce was to be in the form of a pig-shaped chalkboard sign. Modeled after a friend's cutting board, this sign took no time to make.

The Market Square Farmers' Market is one of my favorite weekly activities. (Truth is, I miss it so much in the winter, the first Saturday of its return gets marked on my calendar well in advance.) I got to dog-watch, people-watch, food evangelize, listen to music, and chat with friends (all in addition to getting my greens!) If you're local, some of my favorite vendors are; Three Bears Coffee and Old City Java (hot coffee even in the dead of August) Rushy Springs Farms (for all the hot sauce you could ever want), Cruze Farm, Good Golly Tamale, and of course Crooked Road Farm. Jonathan raises greens, veggies, happy pigs, and gossipy hens in South Knoxville. Check out their pages and visit them in real life. Every Saturday from 9am - 2pm on Market Square.

STARTING OFF WITH A BANG

This First Friday I will have two pieces on display in the balcony gallery of the Emporium building in Downtown Knoxville. My work will be hanging with work by others who work and participate in Knoxville's art-supporting and art-making spaces!

SUNDAY MORNING

I take pictures with my memory when I drive around. This morning I went out and collected some of them. These are mostly things that I find interesting, and I'll post the rest of them this week.

I like looking for the LIME tag. This one is from a building wall downtown. I've found a few others, mostly in the North Knox / Downtown area, but have seen one as far west as Middlebrook Pike.

KUDZU

I finally got around to finishing this roll of film. It took me about a year. I wanted to attempt double exposures that made places around Knoxville look like they were overtaken by the Kudzu. It just might be my favorite invasive... followed closely by honeysuckle. The base of the roll is kudzu from South Knoxville, and some more landmarks from across the river are on the second exposure.
